My Digital Studio Mondays – Advanced Coloring Technique with Designer Series Papers

Oh what fun I had late yesterday night with My Digital Studio 2… I had a challenge and figured it out… I wanted to color the dress of the girl in the Quinceanera stamp set (129750) with designer paper instead of a basic color… well… normally this is not an option… until you use …. LAYERS!

I had to get pretty darn creative with my layers – so this is an advanced technique – but opens up sooooo many creative possibilities… oh can you see my little wheels in my head turning?!!!

Ok… so this one is advanced if you want… follow along with me… if you are in the Chicago Northshore area, take one of my digital studio classes and I can teach you how to do this one…

1. Create a My Digital Studio2 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ blank card project.

2. Stamp your images onto your page 1 card front and resize them to be the size you desire.  I used the stamps from the Quinceanera stamp set.

3. Using the Punch Designer Tool, select the square punch.  Once the punch is on your card front, resize the punch to cover the area you want to be color with designer series paper.  Select the paper fill and fill your punch with the desired designer series paper.  I used Tea for Two – 20.

Trick!!!:  Sometimes the designer series paper is too big for the stamp I want to fill, so I double click on the punch shape and you can zoom in/ out the paper so that it appears smaller (zoom out) or larger (zoom in).  In my example I zoomed out until the polka dots were small and petite.

4.Ok.. so far so good eh?  Now select the layer menu and move your quinceanera stamp layer to be in front of your punch layer.  You should see the stamped image showing with the squre punch filled with designer series paper in the back…

5. Now here’s the magic on this trick – go to your Free Form tool… and select add Brush Layer… and using whisper white (or whatever the card background color is) paint over the designer series paper – so for mine I painted whisper white on the outside edges of the dress… you have to play with the brush sizes and yes you will have to use the eraser tool too if you go inside the dress lines… so this is where you need lots and lots and lots of patience… practice makes perfect!!!

6. I also used this layer to color the crown, earrings, skin, lips and flowers.  I tried to match the flower color, crown and earring color to the main color in the designer series paper I filled the dress with.

7. Now using the layer menu option (found on the Arrange Menu {Arrange – Order – Layer} at the top menus)  arrange it so that you have the following in order:

a. Stamp  Layer (top most layer)

b. Paint Layer

c. Punch Layer (bottom most layer)

Inkspirations:

Once you do this, print the card out…using the illuminate ink, stamp on the card right inside the crown from the Quinceanera stamp set.  Also use vanilla smooch shimmer spray to make the entire card front and inside and back look shimmery!!!  Add a pocket to place your response cards/ driving directions etc…

…and then the card (which is in invitation for me) will look like this:

Enjoy and hope YOU can try this one… it will take a little patience… but if you can learn this coloring technique … there are so many more creative possibilities using My Digital Studio2!!!
